Calories – What’s the Fuss!

You are here: Home / Wellness / Calories – What’s the Fuss!

January 24, 2020 //  by Kawal//  Leave a Comment

What’s the fuss about this thing called Calories? 🤔 Let’s find out today.. Calorie is a unit of energy. So, Calories refer to the amount of energy we get from the food we have. 1 Calorie is defined as the energy needed to raise temperature of 1 gram of water by 1 degree Celsius. Calories provide energy to our body (our body is 70% water) in the form of heat so that it can function. Calories are basically our fuel. Just like a car cannot run without fuel, similarly our bodies can’t function without Calories.

FYI

  • 1 gram of fat = 9 Calories,
  • 1 gram of protein = 4 Calories,
  • 1 gram of carbohydrates = 4 Calories.

You know well that fats are always bashed but why are the poor carbohydrates made to be the villain but proteins are highly respected when 1 gram of each carbohydrate and protein have the same amount of calories?! Well, lets just not go there because I think this segregation of food into proteins, carbs and fats and let alone Calories, should not be done at all! These are all building blocks that our bodies need, we need them all.

This segregation has all been done by the food industry for the processed packaged food that’s available in the supermarket. This is all a way to distract the general public from the ill effects of the food that’s in those packets! There are many junk foods that are camouflaged as healthy foods and us and our kids are eating them everyday! All kinds of breakfast cereals which claim to be full of fibre, iron, calcium, etc. and coated with chocolate or fruits are nothing but junk. All the ready-made juices that are advertised as being full of vitamins of different kinds, are preservative free are natural and which make you believe that they are meeting your daily health requirements are all JUNK! Your low fat yogurt with pro-biotics and fruits, your fibre biscuit, your digestives, energy drinks, protein bars, spreads, jams, protein powder, they hardly have any nutritional values! It’s really sad to see us all going to the supermarkets and looking for low fat, low carbohydrate, high protein food instead of wholesome food.

Sadly, we’ve become a culture that thinks that the packaged breakfast cereals, protein powders and tinned milk is safe but raw milk and compost-grown tomatoes are unsafe. This needs to change because have you ever thought why are we depending on supplements so much whereas our forefathers didn’t? That’s because we are so fazed by these fancy packaged food with its nutritional claims that we don’t even see what harm it’s doing to us. The food industry is earning big bucks and we are at the suffering end.

On top of that we start calorie counting in our our staples (fruits, vegetables, rice, wheat, lentils etc.). This is just WRONG because that’s how nature gave that food to us, in its purest form and nature knows best. What we should be focusing on is that how wholesome and how fresh our food is. What should be important are the ingredients and the cooking process of the food. Focus on buying local as much as you can. Forget about buying the “low fat” variety, it’s all a gimmick. It highly lacks in nutrient value and would make you feel unsatisfied and that will make you unhappy, buy wholesome instead, you’ll feel the difference.

Remember good food = good mood ❤️

So next time count blessings from your memories and not the food Calories!
