Guru ka Langar – Langar is a term used in Sikhism for the community kitchen in Gurdwara (Sikh temple) where a vegetarian meal is served to all visitors free of cost, without the distinction in religion, ethnicity, caste, creed, gender, economic status or status in society. Meals at Langar are wholesome, nourishing, nutritious and simple. In the photo above you can see Roti (flatbread), daal (lentils), Sabzi (spiced dry vegetables), yogurt, pickle and kheer (rice pudding, dessert). Dessert is mostly served on special occasions (as it should be). Everyone sits on the floor on a carpet, cross legged and eats. There is a zero food wastage policy in Langar i.e. Only get what you are hungry for so that no food is thrown away to waste as there is already a lot of starvation in this world. Guru Nanak Dev ji, the first Guru of Sikhs said that over consumption (lobh, greed) and wastage of food involves a drain on earth’s resources and hence on life. So, Learn this mantra in life, EAT WHAT YOU ARE HUNGRY FOR.
Langar is prepared fresh, clean and hygienically. At home also, prepare food fresh as much as you can (my mother-in-law always says me to cook fresh).
So the things that Langar teaches us
Eat a wholesome and nutritious meal that includes grains, legumes, vegetables, yogurt and pickles. In short, eat #realfood.

Sit on the floor with your family and eat, it’s excellent for digestion and most importantly its a good family time.

Above all it teaches that we are all equal. Treat each other with love and respect.
